My wife and I love to travel, and we often use short-term rental services like Airbnb as an alternative to expensive hotel stays. While our house was being remodeled earlier this year, we stayed in a condo in Little Italy here in San Diego using Airbnb. And we hosted families from Portland, Australia and Mexico for stays ranging from three days to almost two weeks in our previous North Park home, using Airbnb to screen the guests and arrange the details. We talked to our neighbors before we hosted, sent them the electronic profiles of the people who were coming to stay and gave the neighbors our cellphone numbers if any problems came up. None ever did.

San Diego Union Tribune: Airbnb to collect San Diego tourist taxes

Airbnb will begin collecting tourist taxes later this month directly from San Diego’s visitors on behalf of its hosts.

Previously, Airbnb hosts were expected to collect the 10.5 percent transient occupancy tax, as well as the 0.55 percent tourism marketing district tax and remit it to the city of San Diego on their own. That didn’t always happen.

On July 15, after the Comic-Con International convention, the popular short-term vacation rental service will include that amount on its bills to guests.

The best way to go after the burgeoning private vacation rental market in Pacific Beach is to try to collect hotel occupancy taxes, city councilwoman Lorie Zapf told about 120 people at the Pacific Beach Town Council meeting on February 18.

Smart Growth & Land Use Committee To Address Short Term Rentals

San Diego City Councilmember Lorie Zapf is the Chair of the Smart Growth & Land Use Committee, and has issued a memo to the members of the San Diego City Council advising them that the committee will take up the discussion of short term rentals at their next meeting.

The memo asks for input from the other councilmembers and is CCd to the Mayor and City Attorney’s offices.
